The West Potomac boys swim and dive team bettered their record to 2-0 on Friday night, Dec. 7, defeating McLean High School 161-149 at the Mount Vernon Rec Center. The Wolverine girls fell to a tough McLean team 86-228 on the same night.
The boys’ team was led by freshman Matthew Morris, who remained undefeated on the season in his individual events, winning both the 200y individual medley in a personal best 2:08.58, and the 50y freestyle in 23.14. He was also a part of the two West Potomac relays that won. The team of Morris, seniors Will Klima and Cole Miller, and sophomore Clark Bayer swam 1:43.82 in the 200y medley relay to finish first. Bayer, Miller, and Morris later teamed with sophomore A.J. Terio to win the 200y freestyle relay in 1:32.52.
The Wolverine boys had several other first place winners. Sophomore John Dinkel scored more than 15 points higher than his previous personal best in the 1m dive to win with 175.90 points. He led a 1-2-3 sweep of the dive event by the West Potomac boys, as junior Brian Deighton took second with a score of
157.25, and freshman Bodie Offringa rounded out the top three places, scoring a personal best 118.60 to finish third.
Miller was first in the 100y butterfly in a personal best time of 57.34. He swam another personal best (2:11.71) to finish third in the 200y individual medley. Freshman John French swam a personal best 1:00.15 to win the 100y backstroke, and was also third in the 200y freestyle in another personal best 2:02.57. Second place finishes for the Wolverines came from Bayer in the 200y freestyle (a personal best 1:51.51) and the 100y freestyle (51.02) and Klima in the 100y breaststroke (1:06.70). Sophomore Andrei Zaitsev had the biggest time drop of the night for the West Potomac boys, as he took more than 5 seconds off his personal best time in the 500y freestyle to finish second in 5:50.06. One other Wolverine boy finished in the top three in an individual event, as junior Camden Mounts swam to a third place finish in the 500y freestyle in a personal best time of 6:04.81.
A number of other West Potomac boys swam best times, including senior Sean Murphy (50y freestyle), juniors Alex Johnson (200y freestyle) and Wesley Uhrin (100y backstroke), sophomores Aidan Lansburgh (100y butterfly), A.J. Terio (100y freestyle), and Marco Molino (100y freestyle), and freshman Andrew Fazackerley (100y backstroke).
The Wolverine girls won one individual event against a very strong team from McLean High School. Junior Sheridan Phalen led the West Potomac girls’ effort, winning the 50y freestyle in 24.57. She also swam a personal best 1:04.60 to finish second in the 100y backstroke. Senior Lilly Harris took second in a very exciting race in her signature event, the 500y freestyle, swimming 5:58.56.
The 200y freestyle relay team of Phalen, juniors Olivia Petretich and Gabrielle Greszler, and sophomore Julianna Skopp-Cardillo placed second with a time of 1:44.19. Greszler swam to a third place finish in the 100y butterfly in 1:04.58.
Junior Maeve Gilmartin recorded the biggest time drop of the night for the Wolverine girls. She dropped more than 14 seconds in the 200y freestyle. Other personal best times came from five freshman girls. Fiona Houlgate (200y freestyle), Erin Althouse (200y Individual medley and 100y breaststroke), Juliette Fore (200y individual medley), Francesca Almaida (100y butterfly), and Ella Stolarz (100y backstroke) all dropped time in their events.
